The largest island of the Dodecanese known for it’s unique architecture, mythical old town and superlative beaches with crystal clear waters.
Passing through the gates of the city feels like getting lost in a movie as you walk through cobblestone streets and straight to the shops and cafes.
One of Rhodes three harbours is the Mandraki port which is traced by three iconic windmills. It was once a guard tower from the 15th century. Also the location of the phenomenal Colossus of Rhodes on the Wonders of the Ancient World, it is one of the most fun to explore on foot.
Dating back to the 20th century when Rhodes was under Italian control.
Today it is a museum which features the story of the monument and exhibits the ancient architecture of the Main Hall and the arcaded courtyard which have survived time.
If you are more in to the idea of a refreshing mountain hike then look no further than Filerimos mountain which is about ten kilometres from the southwest of Rhodes city.
Surrounded by cypresses and wild peacocks is the Monastery from the 15th century, which features the hallmarks of Gothic architecture.
Following the mountain path will eventually lead to a breathtaking view over the coast and farmland to the west.
The highlight of the modern village of Lindos is the Acropolis a remarkable site of which history takes you back to the Mycenaeans from the 7th century BC when it was used for defensive purposes.
The roundup of ancient ruins that is now left features a magnificent view of the coastline, which makes the climb to the top worthwhile.
One of the largest urban centres of the island dating back to the prehistoric times, it was occupied by the Mycenaeans.
The ruins of the city are located at Rhodes’ northwest coast at the base of Mount Akramytis.
It features a terrace at the top on which the acropolis lies.
Below this is the Hellenistic temple, a fountain hose, an agora and an inscribed wall with dedications to the ancient Greek Gods like Zeus, Poseidon and Artemis.
Prasonisi, a tidal island on the south of Rhodes joined by sand to the mainland and is really like no other on the island.
During the winter months the tide is high covering the sand completely which makes Prasonisi look stranded.
However, during summer time it is the perfect nature reserve and a great opportunity for a hike or a relaxing experience on a beach with water on both sides.
The rolling waves on the west side make it great for wind and kite surfing while the shallow water on the east is more inviting for the less experienced water sports enthusiasts.
Quite some way from the tourist sites but definitely a journey that won’t disappoint is Monolithos castle which was once one of the four strongest monuments of the island that was never conquered.
Walking along the pine edged paths lead to the rocky cliffs on top of mountain Akramytis behind where you can savour the view of the sea and spot the Dodecanese islands.
The perfect beach to relax straight after an adventurous hike in Lindos Acropolis.
On the southern curve of an oval shaped bay which has a small opening towards the northeast. There lies the main sandy beach.
There is another pebble beach right under the Acropolis on the north end which is smaller.
Both beaches’ highlights are the transparent crystal blue waters and the tranquilizing environment which you will definitely not want to miss out on.
Comprised of 800m of fine golden sand and enclosed on three sides by rocky slopes and pines this beautiful beach looks like it came out of a dream.
Accomodating rows of sun bathing beds and umbrellas, several beach bars and restaurants set up the perfect environment for a relaxing experience.
On the other hand, there is a water sports centre on the beach if you are seeking the thrill of a water adventure.
Favoured since the ancient times for their curative properties, the natural Springs at Kalithea feature a complex designed with neo-Baroque and Moorish architectures with exotic bushes and greenery planted in the gardens.
A beautiful environment and café to dine or have a coffee by the Kalithea bay. The bay is fringed by palm sunshades and loungers offering a great opportunity for a swim.
Last but not least, Faliraki which is a fishing village and seaside resort town on the east coast of Rhodes. It is best known for it’s sandy emerald beach and lively nightlife.
There is a multitude of activities for people of all ages. Shopping at the Faliraki square, the night life at the bar street, dining at the taverns and savouring the freshly caught seafood are some of the many things you can enjoy.
